Summary

The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup and, in the uproar, Geralt was seriously injured。 The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times。

But now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered from his injuries。

While war rages across all of the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it。 It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl - Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra, has vanished - until a rumor places her in the Niflgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor。
Injured or not, Geralt has a rescue mission on his hands。

A 4。5Maybe the best of the series so far。 The character interaction is fantastic。 And the storytelling - great use of a myriad of storytelling skills。 Very excited to keep reading the series。

I'm plowing through these books and I had to look up what happened in this one so that's a bad sign。 Though I do remember the phrase "baptism of fire" gets used like 5 times and all in different circumstances so the author must have really liked that phrase。 Maybe it's better in Polish。Geralt goes on a journey to look for Ciri, who has been missing since the last book, and some people inexplicably go with him despite him being a moody jerk about it and the road being very dangerous。 As usual, th I'm plowing through these books and I had to look up what happened in this one so that's a bad sign。 Though I do remember the phrase "baptism of fire" gets used like 5 times and all in different circumstances so the author must have really liked that phrase。 Maybe it's better in Polish。Geralt goes on a journey to look for Ciri, who has been missing since the last book, and some people inexplicably go with him despite him being a moody jerk about it and the road being very dangerous。 As usual, the author doesn't know how to structure a novel, so it's just event after event, some of them related and some of them involving characters we've never heard from discussing events we've never heard about。 Most of the scenes are dialogues describing events that happened at other times。 Meanwhile, Ciri joins a murderous gang who we're supposed to like because while they do steal and murder, they don't rape (man, a lot of women get raped in these books) but that's a low bar, isn't it? I'm sure there's a reason this never came up in the games。There is no ending and nothing is resolved。 On to the next book! 。。。more

Actual rating 3。7The first half of this series midpoint was a bit dull and bloated。 But I felt like I was really getting a sense of where things are going in the second half (and especially the last quarter)。 It seems we have a "fellowship" now and I'm excited to see those relationships continue to grow as they work toward individual and collective goals。 The way these fellowship characters interweave with the overarching plots is what's going to keep me invested in the rest of the series, methi Actual rating 3。7The first half of this series midpoint was a bit dull and bloated。 But I felt like I was really getting a sense of where things are going in the second half (and especially the last quarter)。 It seems we have a "fellowship" now and I'm excited to see those relationships continue to grow as they work toward individual and collective goals。 The way these fellowship characters interweave with the overarching plots is what's going to keep me invested in the rest of the series, methinks。 On to Tower of Swallows! 。。。more

This is definitely my favorite Witcher book so far, I was hooked from beginning to end and finished it in 3 days。 I really enjoy the way the Sapkowski jumps between povs of characters, I find it really engaging。 I absolutely loved every character introduced in this book, my favorites were Milva and Regis。 This book was awesome, I’m starting the tower of swallows tomorrow, I hope it’s just as great。

Good book。 It concentrated more on the everyday things that Gerald and his crew had to deal with than the actual fights, but I found it refreshing and hardly boring。 The new characters introduced were pretty interesting, even more than some of the old ones。

3。75I don’t know what to think about this one。 I loved the banter between Geralt’s group, frankly I think this one has the best dialogues throughout all the books so far, and I really felt the characters are well-developed and distinguished。 On the other hand the action is very slow, sometimes feels sloppy and I was wondering where it’s really going。 For me, there was not nearly enough of Yennefer (pls I need some magic and politics) and too much of Ciri being straight up annoying。 I understand 3。75I don’t know what to think about this one。 I loved the banter between Geralt’s group, frankly I think this one has the best dialogues throughout all the books so far, and I really felt the characters are well-developed and distinguished。 On the other hand the action is very slow, sometimes feels sloppy and I was wondering where it’s really going。 For me, there was not nearly enough of Yennefer (pls I need some magic and politics) and too much of Ciri being straight up annoying。 I understand how important she is in the series and that she needs to get that ‘character development’ but it’s really scary what she’s capable of doing with her witcher training under influence of the wrong people。 In this light I see Geralt’s journey not as a race to protect Ciri from being used by really powerful people (whether it’s Nilfgaard, any other kingdom or lodge of sorceresses) but a race against corruption of her character。 。。。more
